Until June 2016, the plan was to move into my parents’ unfinished basement with my wife and our young son. It was a bad plan, for obvious reasons. But it was the only plan we had. I felt defeated by three years on the ‘academic job market’, and I was broke. A SSHRC postdoc in the US when the Canadian dollar fell to 68 cents had proven to be a financial disaster. I told myself that 2016 would be my last year looking for an academic job.

The Evaluation of Darwin

For those who read Spanish, Eduardo Gudynas from Montevideo, Uruguay has an article in La Republica on the Charles Darwin’s application for an academic post. Seems appropriate as I apply for similar positions:

Educación universitaria: El aspirante carece tanto de una maestría como de un doctorado (PhD). Sólo cuenta con un grado de Bachiller en Artes. Ese grado además no es parte de la carrera en ciencias básicas, sino que se vincula al programa de cursos para Ciencias de lo Divino para convertirse en pastor. Nos consta además que el concursante tomó ese curso porque el padre le obligó a ello después de intentar estudiar en la Universidad de Edimburgo, donde demostró poco compromiso. Por lo tanto, el postulante carece de títulos adecuados, y como han dicho varias veces las autoridades, esa carencia indica su incapacidad para llevar adelante investigaciones o lograr hallazgos destacados.
